This morning we are in Marina di Ragusa on the south coast of Sicily. We will wait out a big blow that is due to come in tonight (Friday) and then we plan to work our way NW up the coast and jump off to head to Tunisia around Tuesday. I'm in the research phase for a new novel that will be set in Florida around the time of the Pearl Harbor attack when the Picket Patrol (or Hooligan's Navy) of civilian vessels roamed the Florida Straits looking for U-boats to report their locations. I would love to be able to get your assistance on fact-checking when I get this one written.
Hi Christine, I'd be delighted to assist with your WWII novel. I served on four frigates during my 12 years on sea duty, screening our carrier battle groups against Soviet submarines. If you need a resource providing the U-Boat perspective, read, "A Game of Birds and Wolves" (Simon Parkin, Back Bay Books, 2020) about the Royal Navy WRENS who helped develop a strategic game that allowed the RN to understand and anticipate Wolfpack operations and tactics. Welcome back. I have missed your writing. We had a sailboat based in Marmaris Turkey for several years. I look forward to revisiting this amazing part of the world through your posts.
Welcome fellow sailor! Yes, this is an amazing part of the world. You can barely walk 10 feet in any direction without stumbling over ruins. They are building a new road on the hillside above the marina, and I often take my daily walks up there. In the pile of rubble, you can clearly see stones that have square corners and you know they were worked by some mason anywhere from 30 to 3,000 years ago.
Happy to hear from you. In the 1950s my father supervised the installation of a powerline from Ankara to Izmir. Rode a donkey and wore oxhide slider-shoes. I wonder if your travels took you to Troy or the SE Asia Minor (Ephesus et other biblical areas; Patmos of Revelation ?? Best Look forward to reading you and seeing the new-Christine voice.
Hi John! Wow! Your dad must have had some great stories to tell about that. One of the things that is so fascinating about this country is that it has so rapidly become a first-world country - like in the last 25 years! The urban centers are like any other city in Europe or North America with 5-story shopping malls, Starbucks, Subway, Burger King, homes with high speed Internet, and women with head scarves walking arm in arm with women with piercings, tattoos, crop tops. Yet, everywhere you go there are these layered ruins that on the same site will have Lycian, Byzantine, Greek, Ottoman, etc. artifacts. The next town to the west of us is Demre, home of St. Nicholas. I hope to share so much of this amazing country in the coming months.
